Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has explained the rationale behind government’s new National Rental Scheme, initiated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He revealed that the Scheme sought to aid citizens in acquiring accommodation with funds that can be paid over a period of time.
During the launch of the party’s 2020 manifesto on Saturday, the NARC was revealed as part of government’s campaign promises going forward into a second term.
Speaking on the PM Express on Monday, the Ofoase Ayeribi MP said Ghana seeks to supports citizens by relieving them of accommodation related difficulties.
“The scheme is set to serve as a loan allowance of payment of rent and purchasing of homes at an affordable rate,” he stated.
He went on to say, “We have another level which is got to do with the middle-income housing. And the middle-income housing we are looking at solves it in two ways."
"There is a mortgage scheme where people will have to pre-finance it and pay over a period of time and there is also the Supply-side, which seeks to make landmarks available."
Mr Oppong Nkrumah, however, indicated that one more thing the government seeks to achieve is to reduce the cost of producing housing units in terms of the input.
He said this is in terms of unencumbered land at a low price that makes it easier for those in the construction space to really put out really affordable housing.
