The ruling National Democratic Congress’ [NDC] ‘ban’ on discussions in the media on whether or not former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings or any other person would be contesting the flagbearership of the party was breached Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours of the directive. It happened when the Communication’s Director of the Friends of Nana Konadu clashed with Editor of the Informer newspaper, over matters arising from discussions on the emerging “power struggle” in the NDC.The discourse degenerated into wild name calling and personal attacks from both sides over the authenticity of stories published by the Informer on Nana Konadu with Owusu Bempah alleging that Benjamin Essuman was spreading falsehood about the former First Lady.Owusu Bempah had called into the Dwaso Nsem programme hosted by Adakabre Frimpong Manso to shed some light on why Nana Konadu had still not said a word on a campaign by some persons within the party to sponsor her to contest the flagbearer position of the party for election 2012.
While trumpeting the achievements of Nana Konadu and explaining why he believes she is the right person to lead the NDC in 2012, Owusu Bempah took a swipe at Benjamin Essuman, editor of the Informer for publishing on the front page of the paper’s Tuesday, October 27 edition, that Owusu Bempah was a card bearing member of the NPP and that he allegedly used his position at a London base to dupe unsuspecting clients and ran to Ghana after the 2008 general elections.Owusu Bempah also described Mr. Essuman as ‘a liar’ who peddles untruths and is funded by Key individuals at the seat of government and that persons around the president were behind all informer’s publications, including its lead stories. The Informer editor took a strong exception to the accusation and returned ‘fire’, describing his accuser as a mole who is being used to destroy the NDC.Mr. Essuman also alleged that Owusu Bempah was funded by Nana Konadu to publish a newspaper which has collapsed - intimating that if the former First Lady could not sustain the publication of a newspaper, what shows that she can lead the NDC to win the 2012 general elections? The NDC Tuesday banned with immediate effect banned all unrecognized groupings that are not recognized by the party’s constitution, such as footsoldiers, after a marathon meeting. The ban, said to have been imposed since 2002, has been renewed following the current splinter forces emerging to support individuals as candidates for Election 2012.Story by Adomonline/Ghana
