So DIY week is drawing to a close. It's been good hasn’t it? All that inspiration we've got from hearing the tips and tricks that are empowering us to pursue financial independence as entrepreneurs in 2015.
We've learnt the traits of an entrepreneur, we've discovered how to fund our enterprise, we've faced the challenges of being the boss and come to grips with the legal requirements of running our own businesses. In a minute I'll tell you how we're capping off DIY week in a way that will guarantee your ability to walk out there today and bring your business dream to life.
But other things have been happening this week too. On Monday, we got wind of the latest love letter in the on-going romantic correspondence between OccupyGhana and the Auditor General . And yes, it contains another ultimatum. 14 days this time, two weeks, for the Auditor General to prove that he wasn’t lying when he told OccupyGhana in confidence that he had at least one case in court against a government body that had broken spending rules. The pressure group is also expecting the A-G to state categorically that OccupyGhana is right and the A-G is wrong about everything else. Stay tuned for the next episode of our telenovella, la Generale Occupado.
On Tuesday morning, KKD was denied bail again. And then Adom FM broke the news that fire had engulfed the central stores of the Ministry of Health. There were no fatalities, but two hundred and thirty million cedis worth of damage was sustained. On the plus side, the health minister assessed the damage and declared there was nothing to worry about, since the loss of two hundred and thirty million cedis worth of medical supplies was not enough to affect the supply of drugs to Ghanaians . I guess I now understand those who felt we didn’t need to go to the IMF. After all, we are rich.
Tuesday, was also the day I interviewed the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije. The long-time friend of Multimedia was responding to a daily guide story about his most recent traffic adventures. The newspaper article suggested that the Bearded Crusader had ordered his bodyguard to open fire on a car that had been tailgating his. Mr Vanderpuije confirmed that the shooting did occur, but denied that he was anywhere near the scene where the shots were fired, and therefore did not order it. He also said he did not endorse the use of fire arms in this manner by his police escort.
I asked him what he would say to his critics who suggest that his bodyguard was taking a cue from Mr Vanderpuijes own well documented traffic brawls. At this point, the Mayor of all Mayors chucked his toys out of the pram, lobbed a few choice words at me and with a loud cry of " this is nonsense!" , abruptly "dropped that yam" on me.
Ah well, they did promise me this job would not be boring!
We woke up on Wednesday morning to hear news of two more love letters, one from KKD and the other from the girl accusing him of rape. The entertainment and fashion icons statement, was a confession that he had sinned and was asking God for forgiveness. The 19 year old girls letter was longer and addressed to the Director of Public Prosecution, declaring she was no longer interested in pursuing the case against KKD. Her reason? The "insensitive", " media frenzy" that had come along with her claim that a public figure had raped her.
In a totally unrelated but equally interesting development, President Mahama suspended the CHRAJ boss on Wednesday. He didn’t do this on his own initiative though. It was on the advice of the judicial council.
Which brings us neatly to Thursday. More heads rolled as the President dissolved the board of Metro Mass and interdicted the MD and another manager. This was all over the mysterious disappearance of some buses. You and I may lose our keys and phones but at Metro Mass, they lose buses.
Now remember Tuesdays fire at central stores? As at Thursday the fire still hadn't been put out completely. Turns out the fire service first run out of water and then they run out of gas masks, causing delays in their fight to subdue the fire that had already consumed two hundred and thirty million cedis worth of our medical supplies. Now get this, of all the items we lost in the fire, none of them was insured. Not even a single tablet of paracetamol. Two hundred and thirty million cedis worth of medical assets burnt to a crisp. That's enough money to build twelve CHPS compounds. Enough to clear the remainder of judgements debts to the BDC's .
Anyway, someone decided that this didn’t make leadership look very smart, so a directive was issued for all state owned assets to be insured. Tony Goodman, PRO of the health ministry, said insurance had simply not been their priority in the past. But now that two hundred and thirty million cedis had gone up in flames, they could now do what they do best and react, by insuring all as yet unburnt assets.
So that’s been the week so far, it is certainly not over. Not by a long shot. Today's show is the last of DIY Week, and boy are we finishing in style. As we prepare you to go out and take over the world as freshly motivated entrepreneurs, we will bring you final thoughts and insights from an entrepreneur who has been there and done that. He has inspired books , songs, accolades and even insults. He is undoubtedly the most colourful character on Ghana's landscape, he has shared his profound and personal insights on the necessary ingredients for entrepreneurial success. His name is Prince Kofi Amoabeng, the maverick CEO of UT Bank, and he's on the Super Morning Show today.
As if that is not enough, we have another surprise for you. He is one of Africa's elite club of billionaires. He has built one of the largest oil companies in the sub region. His plane is touching down at Kotoka as we speak, and he will be joining me right here in the studio for breakfast. If you want to know who I'm talking about, just keep your hands away from that dial.
My name is Kojo Yankson and it's been a week of Inspiration, Infernos, Insurance and Insults.
GOOD MORNING, GHANAFO!
