Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced plans to partner with a private entity to establish firearm training facilities in Ghana, aiming to enhance safety and professionalism among gun owners.
Mubarak explained that the initiative is designed to address both the lack of adequate resources within the Ghana Police Service and the need for stricter oversight of firearm usage.
“One of the things we are even doing at the ministry is to partner with a private person to set up a gun training point,” he revealed.
“Our police, lack of resources is the same challenge they always tell you. So we want a private person to partner with the police so that we can get most of these firing ranges properly done.”
The comments were made during an appearance on Accra-based TV3 programme Hot Issues on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
Under the proposed scheme, prospective firearm owners will be required to undergo formal training at these accredited ranges before receiving ministerial approval for their gun licences.
“People can go and pay for the training before the minister approves the licence of your gun,” Minister Mubarak said, emphasising the focus on responsible gun ownership.
By ensuring that all gun owners receive certified training, the Ministry hopes to reduce accidents, strengthen public safety, and promote a culture of responsible ownership.
“This is about making sure that anyone holding a firearm knows how to use it safely and responsibly,” the Minister added.
