The Ashanti Regional office of the Information Services Department (ISD) led by its Regional Director, Mr. Charles Nkrumah, has embarked on a three-day public education campaign on gun amnesty in the region.
The campaign is conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and Ghana Police Service.
It seeks to allow the public to voluntarily surrender their unlicensed or illicit firearms to the Ghana Police Service without facing any interrogation, arrest or prosecution.
The move, according to the security agencies, was aimed at reducing the number of illicit firearms in circulation and promote a gun-violence-free Ghana.
The Gun Amnesty Public Education Campaign took place in thirty (30) districts out of the 43 districts within the Ashanti Region to interact with the community members about the dangers of using firearms without proper licences.
The districts visited included Tafo, Suame, Afigya Kwabre South and North, Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Atwima Nwabigya, Adansi Asokwa, Obuasi East, Obuasi West Municipalities, among others.
The team visited local radio stations within the area, community information centres (CIC), market centres, churches, and mosques as part of the exercise.
Some of the town folks received the message wholeheartedly and pledged to surrender their unlicensed firearms to Police Service and take steps to license them.
