A man who prefers sobolo to red wine, a man who says the guitar is an amazing companion and now a man who is telling us to just do it.
Shy and down to earth musician Six Strings graced the ‘JoyNews Interactive Unplugged’ stage.
Mr Six Strings describes himself as a musician who does not fit into a box as he does a little bit of everything over the acoustic guitar.
We spoke with the guitarist about his journey so far, his experience as an independent artiste and some of the lessons he learnt during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.
What type of artist are you?
I am a guitarist who sings. My aim is whatever I play be it someone’s song or an original piece, I want someone to hear what the song is saying. My main aim is not for you to jump up and dance, I want you to hear the song. I will not put myself in any box, I do a bit of everything but over the acoustic guitar.
Is there a reason you are not aggressive in the release of your songs?
With the type of music I do, we are still knocking for people to accept it. It is not your number one song that everyone will jump on. Our style has a bit of western so it’s taking time for people to accept it. We are still knocking, once we have everybody listening we will be feeding them every day. There will be a lot more works this year 2021.
How is it being an independent artiste?
It’s not easy. I would love someone to push money in [funding] me, all I have to do is just write songs and how it gets to the last person in some village wouldn’t be my headache. I have to do all of that. I do my videos sometimes. I record some of the videos and put them online. It’s not easy.
As an alternative artiste if you were to feature a highlife artiste who would it be and why?
Highlife… (sighs) That’s a difficult one. I always wanted to have a song with the late Papa Yankson. It won’t be bad to have a song with Amakye Dede and Kojo Antwi but I have never really given it a thought.
What about the new age school artistes?
I really admire Kuami Eugene, I really admire his energy. KiDi is an old buddy and then the ladies maybe Adina. Then there’s a new vibe of artistes, there’s Akan, Reynolds the Gentleman even though they are doing songs you can dance to they don’t fall into any particular space, they are doing their own thing. Those are amazing guys…Cina Soul, Worlasi all those guys…they are people I know I will be doing stuff with.
As an independent artiste what are some of the lessons you learnt during the pandemic?
This is where I have an advantage, I don’t make something out of music only when I am playing for big crowds or concerts. I play for families. There are families that invite me and I get good money from that. Call me for your family and I will come and play.
In his latest song ‘Just Do It’, Six Strings features singer song writer Darley.
The song is a push to anyone who wants to start something. The person who is going after their dreams but too afraid to start. Just Do It.
