A presidential candidate aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, has dismissed recent opinion polls which favoured some of his competitors.
"There is only one opinion poll that counts and that opinion poll is on December 22, 2007. Everything else that is going on, you can punch holes in them. They are self-flawed," he said.
"Some of them do not even exist. Somebody has gone to push a piece of paper around. Somebody has filled in papers of their imagination," he added.
Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey made the comment when the Daily Graphic talked to him in connection with the recent opinion polls which suggested that he was not among the fore-runners in the NPP's December 22, 2007 delegates congress to elect the party's flagbearer.
"There are some opinion polls going on, some of which I'm privy to and they will guide me as I move forward," he remarked.
According to Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey, his political track record and distinguished service in government made him the best candidate to lead the NPP to another electoral victory in 2008.
He has held various positions in the NPP administration, including Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations, Minister of Information and Chief of Staff.
At the party level, he was once the Greater Accra Regional Chairman and in the 2000 election, he guided the electoral victory of President Kufuor as his campaign manager.
Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey said he had completed a nationwide campaign tour and the feedback he got was overwhelmingly positive.
On the need for the candidates to run clean campaigns, he said he had been running a clean campaign, adding that “You will find that when I go round I talk about my vision, the things that I want to do. I'm not interested in what other people are doing or they want to do”, Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey said.
“I'm interested in getting across my message. My message is a very positive message. A positive message that is good for Ghana, that is good for the NPP and that is good for members of the NPP. It’s a strong message and I don’t have to be unclean,” he added.
Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey said he was happy about the keen contest for the flagbearership, adding that it showed the talents available in the NPP and why the party was the best to provide good governance for the nation.
