Sherry Dey, a 32-year-old unemployed, on Tuesday appeared before a Tema Circuit Court charged with attempted murder of his girlfriend and attempted suicide.
He has been granted GHc10,000 bail with two sureties to be justified.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Sarah Acquah, told the court presided over by Charles Asiedu that at about 1p.m. on April 17, 2007, Elizabeth met a male friend in her "U" compound vicinity at New Town, Accra and both of them entered a nearby drinking spot.
Sherry, upon a tip-off, went to the spot and allegedly rained insults on the man with Elizabeth accusing him of befriending his girlfriend.
However, Sherry and Elizabeth had stopped seeing each other two months earlier.
The scene, according to Chief Inspector Acquah, attracted lots of people so Elizabeth and the man left in different directions.
Sherry allegedly spotted Elizabeth later on and beat her up. She was rescued by a classmate who took her home.
Elizabeth then informed her elder sister about the assault and she confronted Sherry but the latter said: "If your sister, does not marry me, I'll kill her and myself."
At about 11:45 p.m., on that day, he allegedly managed to get into Elizabeth's room while all the residents were asleep.
He allegedly hit Elizabeth's hand with an iron rod compelling her to scream and shout for help but no one went to her aid.
During the ensuing struggle between the two, Sherry drew a kitchen knife he was hiding on him and stabbed her many times until she fell unconscious.
Her sister who earlier heard her screams later went to her room and found Sherry lying on top of Elizabeth in a pool of blood with the kitchen knife in his hand. Elizabeth's sister subsequently raised the alarm which attracted some residents to the scene and they rushed her to the Tema General Hospital.
Later in the day, a rumour of Elizabeth's death broke out and Sherry on hearing that allegedly stabbed himself a number of times in the stomach. Consequently, he was also rushed to the Tema General Hospital.
Elizabeth was not dead though; the two were treated at the hospital after which Sherry was arrested. Hearing continues on March 20.
