Government has denied speculations it will use tax payers' money in the commemoration of the June 4 Uprising which brought the Rawlings led Armed Forces Revolutionary Council into the political limelight. The day used to be a National holiday until it was outlawed during the Kufuor administration in 2001.But cadres and some followers of the National Democratic Congress have vowed to observe and celebrate the 31st Anniversary of the June 4 Uprising and have settled on Tamale as the venue to climax the anniversary celebration. The opposition New Patriotic Party is alleging that government plans to join in the celebration and might invest the tax payer’s money into a celebration that has been outlawed.Deputy Communications Director of the party, Perry Okudzeto, told Joy News government is “under pressure” to celebrate the day in order not to fuel speculation it has abandoned the ideals of the founder of the NDC in support of the ideals of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He said it is illegal for a constitutional regime to support a military regime and cautioned government against making such a mistake. But the Information Minister, John Tia rebutted the claims, saying the government has nothing to do with the celebration. He said government has taken no such decision to use tax payer’s money to observe the day, adding activities of the celebration would have been outlined if indeed government had any plans in the celebration. He added President Mills is “responsible,” “discerning” and will not engage in anything that will divide the country.John Tia intimated the government will only rule according to the dictates of the constitution.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
