A joint committee of Parliament has come under fire over its report on the salt mining lease granted to Electrochem in Ada.
The Energy and Lands Committee recommended to the House that there should be no review of the mining lease granted to the company.
This is despite allegations of police and military brutalities against the indigenes, which have led to the death of a miner and injuries to many.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Energy Committee Samuel Atta Akyea indicated that there is no factual basis to review or tinker with the mining lease granted to Electrochem.
The people of Ada have also complained about the lease awarded to the company, which has displaced many of the indigenes from their small-scale salt mining activities in the area.
MP for the area, Christian Corletey Otuteye decried what he described as the monopoly granted to Electrochem to mine salt in the area, pushing the indigenes out of business.
"When we go on with this, we will still not have our peace. But let go of things in the manner in which the people also accept. There haven’t been enough stakeholder consultations and that has led to all this…I’m not against the report entirely but I wish it could have been done differently," he said.
