Journalist arrested for stealing ATM card

A freelance journalist has been arrested for allegedly stealing an automated teller machine (ATM) card belonging to a couple in Accra and using it to withdraw GH¢20,000 from their account. The suspect, Terry Kofi Deegbey, 31, after stealing the money, travelled to South Africa to seek greener pastures but later returned to the country. He was arrested by the police at his hideout in Kumasi. According to the Commander of the Commercial Crimes Unit (CCRU) of the CID, Superintendent Felix Koku Mawusi, the suspect used to run errands for the couple, both pensioners resident in Accra. He said the couple trusted Deegbey and sent him on several occasions to cash their cheques for them. After some time, the man became indisposed and, therefore, the couple gave their ATM card to Deegbey to withdraw money for them. In August 2012, Deegbey was said to have taken advantage of his relationship with the couple to steal their ATM card, after which he informed them that the card had been stolen. Thereafter, he accompanied the man to report the purported loss of the ATM card at the bank’s branch at North Kaneshie in Accra and, upon advice by the bank’s officials that the couple write an official letter to that effect, Deegbey helped them to do so and submitted it to the bank. It was after writing the letter that he stole various sums of money, amounting to GH¢20,000, from the couple’s account, the police said. Deegbey travelled to South Africa, Togo and Benin at different times, after which he returned to Ghana. Meanwhile, the couple waited for a long time but their card was not replaced by the bank. However, during that same period, they observed that various sums of money had been withdrawn from their account. The couple, therefore, reported the matter to the bank, which, to their surprise, told them that someone had been using their ATM card to withdraw money from their account. Further investigations led to Deegbey’s arrest.
