Journalists and politicians have met in Akosombo in the Eastern region to deliberate on how to ensure peace ahead of the December elections.
About 40 participants from the media and representatives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), New Patriotic Party (NPP), Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and People National Convention (PNC) attended the workshop organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh, who also attended the workshop, reported that two key groups, the media and political parties, are believed to have a major role to play in ensuring free, fair and an incident free election.
According to her, the media was tasked to uphold the code of ethics and values that guide the profession and also pave the way for information sharing that makes space for everyone so that discerning voters can make their own decision.
The media was also asked to examine issues which matter in an election and promote peace.
Politicians, on the hand, were tasked to uphold and respect their opponents, uphold the rule of law and the country’s constitution.
They were also urged to apply integrity and circumspection in their affairs, and also take on acts that will consolidate the country’s democracy.
