Politicians will never cease to amaze us. If the odds are in favour of them, it’s all free and fair. If it goes against them, they blame every Tom, Dick and Harry.
When Joy Fm, with no political affiliation, did their projections after the December 7 2008 elections, it went in favour of the NPP. The NPP never raised an eyebrow to doubt the credibility of the hardworking privately owned station. Right after the December 28 2008 round-off, the station once more ventured into the tedious task of collating from nationwide provisional figures from the collation centres with their reporters deployed to get firsthand figures. The odds turned in favour of the NDC in the second round.
What could be wrong about this whole exercise? Nothing at all! But the NPP this time round felt uneasy about the whole process. Their hue and cry was that this time their figures were incongruous with that of the FM station’s. The campaign machinery led by the man who wanted to buy the government bungalow, Mr. Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, declared in a press conference that Joy FM was biased and unfair to them.
The NPP needs to save its shameful face by apologizing to Joy FM because they got it right and the party got it all wrong. Joy has indeed been vindicated by the figures released by the EC pointing to the NDC´s victory as it predicted.
Some NPP supporters, including party big-wigs, ungratefully branded the station NDC for putting out figures which were in tandem with other media houses - including Adom FM, Asempa FM, Peace FM, Radio Gold, TV3, Metro TV- which had NDC in the lead. The party has to undo this and other undemocratic pronouncements to gain the right favour of the electorates. Or their coming back will be unpleasant.
All over the world, even in the so-called paragon of democracy, USA, there are media houses who are affiliated to one party or the other. And it is even usual to endorse any presidential candidate of their choice. The Obama phenomenon is ample evidence. In our part of the world it cannot be said to be so emulated.
The NPP foresaw the looming defeat. Because it was mind-boggling for an incumbent government to assume the unofficial role of the opposition. Prior to the first round the NDC complained at everything they felt wasn´t going right. With that fatal defeat stalling them in the face, even the then Commander-in-Chief of the army, the first citizen who can call for a state of emergency or curfew, had cause to insubstantially lament that Tain was unsafe for him to enter. What could have been so childish than this?
All said and done, it is imperative to note that the media has really paid its due in our so-called democratic experiment. Joy Fm did incredibly well as well as it sister stations. I salute them all!
