The latest report of a Principal State Attorney heard demanding money from the brother of an armed robber standing trial lend credence to the assertion by four blacklisted lawyers that there is an endemic corruption in the judiciary, the Forum for Governance and Justice has adduced.Principal State Attorney, George Kwadwo Ofori, who the voice is attributed to, demanded GH¢3,500 to influence the outcome of the trial. The suspect who was arrested Friday is on bail and the BNI is investigating the case.The Convener for the Forum for Governance and Justice Dr Clement Apaak told Joy News the case must be treated seriously, adding that the group was not “surprised” by the contents of the tape.Dr. Raymond Atuguba, Executive Secretary of the Constitutional Review Commission; the late Mr. Larry Bimi, former Chairman of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE); Mr David Annan, a member of the NDC legal committee; and Mr Abraham Amaliba, a private legal practitioner, at a forum to mark the Constitution Week organized by the NCCE averred that there was corruption in the judiciary.They were subsequently hauled before the General Legal Council, the regulatory authority for the legal profession in Ghana, by the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJ) to substantiate their claims.Meanwhile, the Forum for Governance and Justice, who had challenged the legitimacy of the General Legal Council to trial and sanction the four, reiterated that the revelation confirms the assertion by the lawyers that corruption was rife within the judiciary.Dr Clement Apaak stated: “If the recording is authenticated…it goes a long way to establish the credibility of the four lawyers and many ways to vindicate them for the statement that they made suggesting that there is corruption in the judiciary which is the basis for which they are currently being blacklisted.”He said the tape should serve as a wake up call to the Chief Justice, Attorney General and all stakeholders to initiative “credible steps” to ensure that justice in the country is “accessible and not for sale”.
