Since Justice Kpegah initiated his lawsuit against Nana Akuffo Addo that Nana is not a lawyer, many people have written either supporting one side or the other.
In this paper, I intend to highlight some of the inconsistencies that are contained in the lawsuit and the subsequent statements issued by Justice Kpegah, in order to demonstrate that Justice Kpegah does not have any case at all.
1. W.A.D Akuffo Addo or W.E.D Akuffo Addo
Firstly, the initial story indicated that according to Justice Kpegah, Nana is impersonating someone, W.A.D. Akuffo Addo. Others also stated that it was W.E.D Akuffo Addo. I am not sure whether the reference to W.E.D. instead of W.A.D. as part of the name of the person that Nana is alleged to be impersonating as a lawyer, was actually made by Justice Kpegah. If Justice Kpegah gave the initial of the person as W.E.D. instead of W.A.D. then he was trying to be deceitful, because Nana has never been named by any name that can be abbreviated to E.
Further, when the Nana and William are ignored, Akuffo Addo has all the other names. So in my view, Justice Kpegah should have considered firstly, the similarities between all the names, other than Nana and William respectively. In short, as I will demonstrate shortly, the only issue about the name, if any, is the replacement of William for Nana.
2. Evidence from Oxford & Middle Temple
It is important to note that Kofi Atta of Cambridge has released freedom of information confirming that Nana by name William Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo attended Oxford University for one year or so.
Further, Kofi has released another freedom of information confirming that according to the Middle Temple in the UK, the same person (William Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo) was called to the English Bar. In fact, the later also confirmed as part of his details, that he is the son of Edward Akuffo Addo ( former Chief Justice and ceremonial President of Ghana).
I thought this should have put to rest any suggestion of Nana impersonating the same person having the name as the name he used at Oxford and called to the English Bar, but not so to Justice Kpegah and Michael Bokor. It is however, significant to indicate here that when Kofi Atta obtained information about Nana from Oxford, it did not have anything to do with what was the real name of Nana, but only to confirm whether Nana had ever gone to Oxford. Many people especially, NDC members and sysmpathisers such as Michael Bokor seized on that information to accuse Nana that he was hiding something from his past in relation to what happened at Oxford.
It is therefore strange that in some months later, the same people would claim that Nana is impersonating someone by the name he had been known at Oxford.
3. Why only Nana could be W.A.D. Akuffo Addo
Most importantly, just a bit of common sense clearly indicates that it is highly improbable for any person not from Nana’s family or extended family to have a name consisting of all the individual names made of Nana’s name. The reason is that, as an Akan, I cannot envisage how one will have Danquah, Akuffo, and Addo all in his name with Addo found twice, unless the person relates to Nana’s family. In fact, I have probably not come across an Akan who has the same name such as Addo as his middle name and surname as well.
It seems a bit weird. However, according to Ghanaweb (http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/people/pop-up.php?ID=123), Nana’s grandfather (that is the father of his dad, Edward Akufo-Addo) was called William Martin Addo-Danquah. It is clear to me that that is where Nana received the initial part of his names (William Addo Danquah) from, as his father might have named Nana after his dad.
The Akan’s usually name their children after other family members or even friends. I was named as Kwame Amponsah after my father’s uncle and my sister is even named after a family friend. However, when Akan’s go to school some like me use Christian names and father’s surname, hence I am known officially as Joseph Annor, despite that Kwame Amponsah was the name my father gave to me at birth.
Others also use the names given to them at birth at school without including their fathers surname at all. My eldest brother is known officially as (Joseph) Kwasi Okyere, he has never used my dad’s name as far as I can remember. On the hand, some like Nana combine both the names given at birth and the dad’s surname. It appears this is exactly what happened to Nana and he later replaced the William with Nana. Thus, William Addo Danquah comes from his grand-dad and Akuffo-Addo comes from his dad. Also, many Akans prefer to call their children Nana such as Nana Kwaku (when they are named after their parents or so.) It is possible that at home, Akuffo Addo might have been called Nana by his parents and siblings because he was named after his grandfather.
Personally, I am not a fan of calling someone Nana because he was named after an elderly person, since I believe that any person was named after an elderly person, but it is individual choice. In short, beside the Oxford and other UK information that Kofi Atta has released, I am now more convinced that W.A.D (or William Addo Danquah) Akuffo Addo cannot be any person other than Nana Akuffo Addo, because his grandfather was called William Addo-Danquah.
Therefore, it is mischievous for anyone to suggest that he is impersonating another person by the same name he would have been given by his dad. Justice
Kpegah and Michael Bokor could have identified that Nana is the same person known as William, if they have only bothered to do their searches and analyse things the way that I have done. Although, I have realised that Michael Bokor is retreating from his earlier position and now appears only to claim that Nana did not change William to Nana in a proper way.
3. Murder allegation is preposterous and contradictory
Above all these, Justice Kpegah revealed his ignorance and inconsistency when he issued media release in an attempt to justify his lawsuit by claiming that Nana might have murdered someone. According to myjoyonline news article entitled Akufo Addo should stop battling me in the media and face me in court - Justice Kpegah dated 26 March 2013 (http://m.myjoyonline.com/pages/politics/news/201303/103432.php), Justice Kpegah stated as follows:
• “It is an elementary fact in legal circles that it is only when a party to a suit knows he has no defence and or a weak defence that they resort to speaking of peripheral issues such as the use of a stamp as alluded to by Kwame Akufo to the complete neglect of the substantive matter which is that NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO -ADDO stole the identity and is impersonating one WAD Akufo-Addo who was called to the Ghana Bar and is No. 1190 on the ROLL OF LAYERS IN GHANA who may have been murdered in London or Ghana.”
• “MEDIA RED ALERT"
1 will be securing an order from the courts directed at the Coroner of Accra to exhume the mortal remains of the dead body that was found under very mysterious and inexplicable circumstances in the Law Chambers of NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO-ADDO and buried under even more mysterious circumstances. The case must be revisited for all Ghanaians to know what really happened to the victim whose right to life as guaranteed by the 1992 constitution was truncated. Those who aspire to rule this Country must come just as in the Law of equity 'with clean hands.”
Although, Justice Kpegah’s allegations above that one W.A.D. Akuffo ADDO might have been murdered in Ghana or London and the finding of someone's remains in Akuffo Addo's chambers were not in the same paragraph; I take him to mean that he was referring to the same person that was murdered in Ghana or London, whose mortal remains were found at Nana’s Chambers. The above claims are very preposterous and contradictory.
For example, how could the remains of someone that was possibly murdered in London be found in the Chambers of Akuffo Addo in Ghana? How would Akuffo Addo or any other person be able to bring the remains of the person he might have murdered in London to Ghana, without being detected by either British or Ghanaian authorities? Does this claim make sense to Justice Kpegah? Clearly, this claim alone casts significant doubt over the allegations being made by Justice Kpegah.
From all information that has come out so far, it is evident that Nana was legally enrolled as lawyer in the UK and the same also happened in Ghana and that he is the same person as William and not impersonating any other person. Yes, like others like Alfred Ogbamey (Managing Editor of Gye Nyame Concord), I admit that Nana might not have changed his first name William to Nana in a proper way, but does this mean that he is not a lawyer and that he is impersonating someone or even accused of being a murderer? Justice Kpegah may hate Nana Akuffo Addo, but he should not accuse him of such serious crimes when evidence coming out indicates that that is not the case.
4. Envy or truth
In fact, one of the statements in Justice Kpegah’s media release that: “1 am a former Supreme Court Judge, who had to struggle in life to achieve that feat” , appears to suggest that he bears some grudge against Nana.
What has his struggle in life to become a Supreme Court judge to do with whether Akuffo Addo is impersonating someone or not? Yes, Akuffo Addo might have got life easier than Justice Kpegah, but that is how life is, because his dad laid the foundation for him. While many of such people mess up their life, he has also utilised the opportunity to achieve something for himself. So why is Justice Kpegah sounding like, he is envy of him.
After all, Justice Kpegah’s children are also getting it easier than most Ghanaian children including living free in a government bangalow, but no one is complaining. In fact, I want to advise Justice Kpegah that we all struggled in life too and although, while I have not risen to anywhere near where he reached, I am happy that my children are not struggling and they are enjoying life. Who knows what I would have been if my father was rich.
I only thank my God that whether through struggle or so, my parents did what they could and as a result, my children are not struggling like I did. So please, leave Akuffo Addo alone.
5. Igorance of Dr Bokor
I am using the rest of the article to dispute some claims that Michael Bokor has used to tarnish the image of Nana Akuffo Addo. On 4 April 2013, Michael Bokor had an article published on myjoyonline entitled “Akufo-Addo didn’t practise law at Coudere Frères in France” because according to him Nana was just an associate counsel at Coudere Frères (Brothers), a major US law firm, at its Paris office in France (1971–1975). Being an associate counsel, Nana was a junior staff and therefore was an “intern” or administrator.
I am so surprised that Dr Michael Bokor has shown his ignorance here. Although, I am not a lawyer, but an accountant, I work with many lawyers, as among about 1700 or so of the employees of my organisation, at least one quarter of them are lawyers. My understanding is that either in a law profession or whatever it is, title perse does not indicate the level of one’s responsibility. Thus, the ranking of titles may vary form one organisation to another. It is possible for a person to be an assistant accountant in one organisation and have bigger responsibilities than another person called an accountant in another organisation.
In fact, within the same organisation, the title perse may not be used to define the responsibilities of different people. Therefore, it is simply wrong to argue that Akuffo Addo was not practising law because he was an assistant counsel. Dr Bokor should stop approaching issues with biases, which exposes his ignorance.
