Residents of Akurugu Dabor in the Kassena Nankana District of the Upper East region continue their boycott of the ongoing biometric registration as the exercise enters day two.
According to them, they would only rescind their decision if authorities heed their request for a restoration of a name which was changed in one of their electoral areas.
The name of Akurugu Dabor polling stations was changed to Atu-fali – Azasi, and the locals there have clearly registered their displeasure with a boycott.
They believe their right of ownership of the community has been taken from them as natives.
A resident of the area told Joy News due to the boycott the registration officials did not show up on Sunday.
“Yesterday, the Regional Director of Electoral Commission and the District Director of Electoral Commission for Kassena Nankana came around and told them that they should go and think about it and inform them if they will register today.
“But since I came, the people have refused [to register]. They said they don’t need any EC officials here to do the registration until the name is reverted to Akurugu Dabor…and also until they follow the due process of changing the name, they will never agree.”
The Assemblyman of the area, Charles Nsor, has also confirmed the boycott to Joy News and insisted the name should be reverted to Akurugu Dabor.
