The Ministry of Health is to provide life-support equipments to help the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to facilitate health care delivery.
It is however unclear how many of the machines will be supplied, and when they will be delivered at a time only two out of 12 ventilators are currently functional.
Chief Executive of the hospital, Professor Ohene Adjei announced this at a media briefing in Kumasi on Thursday.
The press conference was to disclose efforts by hospital authorities to address faulty equipments at the Intensive Care Unit.
It follows Nhyira Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah’s undercover investigations which revealed that six people had died as a result of the equipment break-down.
However, management and board of the hospital, absolved themselves from blame over the current situation claiming they had made repeated complaints to the contractor who is also responsible for maintenance.
Journalists were given copies of letters sent to Gertech Technology by KATH to draw attention to the faulty equipment.
Though the Ministry of Health directed the German company to transfer knowledge to local technical staff in the repair of equipment, Gertech is yet to comply.
Professor Ohene Adjei re-echoes management’s frustration under the existing maintenance contract with Gertech.
“If we need something, we tell the contractor, they assess, go back, purchase; if it is 20 Euros, you cannot challenge whether it is 20 or 10 Euros and this is what we find unacceptable”.
Challenges related to the contract goes beyond the maintenance of ventilators as the hospital’s technicians are also not allowed to touch equipments let alone repair them.
Professor Ohene Adjei said “the issue is not only about ventilators...And the question we keep on asking ourselves is when are we going to get those parts”.
“But the bottom line is that, our people have to be trained enough so that when we have any problem with any of equipments, we can go directly to them and help us resolve all outstanding issues”
Board Chairman, Dr. Louis Bartels Charles De Bordes, is unhappy no pre-training arrangement was made for locals to take-over from the expatriates.
That, to him, has given rise to the current mishap at Intensive Care Unit.
