Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the NPP, says Ghana’s power supply has been significantly more stable under President Akufo-Addo’s eight-year tenure compared to the erratic energy situation experienced during former President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Known affectionately as NAPO, Dr. Opoku Prempeh shared these remarks while speaking to students at the Pantang Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Accra.
NAPO encouraged the students to support the NPP in the upcoming December 7 elections by voting for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s current presidential candidate, to ensure the continuity of reliable power supply and other progress made under the NPP government.
He emphasised that the achievements of the Akufo-Addo administration in stabilising the energy sector stand as a testament to the party’s commitment to improving Ghana’s infrastructure and quality of life.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the stark contrast between the NPP’s accomplishments in energy stability and the challenges faced under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by Mahama.
He noted that the consistent power supply under the NPP has allowed Ghanaians to engage in educational, economic, and personal activities with fewer interruptions, benefiting citizens and businesses alike.
Further criticizing the former administration, NAPO pointed out that, despite substantial increases in electricity tariffs, the NDC under Mahama failed to resolve the country’s power crisis, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor.’
He claimed that the NDC raised electricity tariffs by 50 per cent during Mahama’s tenure, yet failed to improve energy reliability, leading to hardship for many Ghanaians.
NAPO concluded by reinforcing the importance of a stable power supply for the nation’s growth and development.
He urged voters to consider the NPP’s track record in the energy sector as a compelling reason to retain the party in power, emphasising that the NPP’s leadership has brought tangible benefits to Ghanaians, which they can continue to rely on under Dr Bawumia’s leadership.
“Do you want ‘dumsor’ or ‘Kanea’? We have had ‘kanea’ in the eight years of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahammudu Bawumia. And there was ‘dum, dum, dum, dum’ in the four years of John Dramani Mahama."
“Imagine, imagine, a nurse going through training for three years or four years, no light. What is that? No light. Meanwhile, every year, the electricity bill is increased by 50 per cent and that is NDC for you. They were increasing the electricity bill when the lights were off."
“They were not buying textbooks for schools and they increased the electricity bill to secondary school and university and when Akufo-Addo came, we cancelled the electricity bill to university and we cancelled it to secondary school.”
