Lawyers for Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong say he is “suffering from complications from the Covid-19 condition he suffered last month”.
The explanation follows the absence of the legislator in court on Monday morning.
Expected to be his second appearance, Mr Agyapong who was dragged to the Accra High Court by Justice Wuni risks a possible jail term or fine should he be found guilty of contempt.
The charges follow an earlier outburst by the outspoken MP during a live television show on a pending case.
But his lawyers on September 18 urged the court to halt proceedings explaining they had filed an application at the Supreme Court challenging Justice Awuni’s jurisdiction to hear the matter.
Although Justice Wuni had argued that nothing barred him from proceeding with the case, he adjourned proceedings to September 25 to hear further legal arguments from Mr. Agyapong’s team.
The court on September 25 was informed of a petition Mr. Agyapong had sent to the Chief Justice alleging possible bias in the part of the judge.
The case proceeded nonetheless as his charge was read and a guilty plea entered for him.
But giving more details why their client was unavailable, Lead Counsel for Mr Agyapong, Kwame Gyan said they had attached a note from his doctor to be handed to the court.
“Our client, the honorable Kennedy Agyapong suffered from complications from the post-Covid-19 condition that he suffered last month.
"We arranged for him to seek treatment from the same doctor who treated him of Covid-19,” he said.
Justice Amos Wuni adjourned proceedings to Thursday, October 1 order that the doctor appears to explain the note
