The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate and Former President, John Mahama has described the government’s promise to construct a Port in Keta as a political gimmick.
According to him, the Akufo-Addo-led-government has not exhibited enough commitment to delivering the promise, that it rode on to power in 2016.
Mr. Mahama was speaking at a rally in Keta during his #Mahama4Change2024 Campaign trail of the Volta Region.
“This government has turned the Keta Port issue into a political gimmick. It has become a 419, for deceiving the people of Keta“, he said.
He chastised the government for wasting resources on the promise within the last eight years without erecting a single block for the port, which the people of Keta and the Volta Region had so much longed for.
“Eye Zu!! You haven’t built a breakwater. You have not yet published the feasibility study for us to see. And yet you have a Port Director, Assistant Port Director, port officers, and GHAPOHA people attached to Keta Port, you are paying them. They have 4x4, V8s and everything and meanwhile, only two containers are standing there with a signboard ‘Site for Keta Port’”, he noted.

Mr. Mahama said that his government would establish an inquiry into the initiatives taken, with regards to the construction of the Keta Port, including the appointment of officers for a non-existing Port, undertaking a feasibility study among others.
“Eye Zu!! Eye Za!! Once we come into office, the cabinet will ask for all the documents on the Keta Port. We want to see the feasibility study. We want to see the design. So that a definite decision can be taken on the Port”, he stressed.

Mr. Mahama promised the dredging of the Keta Lagoon, and expanding salt production to improve economic activities as the Lagoon serves as a major source of livelihood in the Keta and Anloga enclaves.
He also outlined the implementation of the proposed 24-hour Economy Policy, and National Apprenticeship Program among others in a bid to create employment and restore the economy.
He stressed that it was crucial for the NDC to win the December 7 general elections to secure the future of this country.
“If we don’t rescue this country, the future of our young people will be in jeopardy”, he stressed.
