The Eastern regional capital, Koforidua is ready to host the 2017 edition of the walk against breast cancer in the country.

The annual event which is under the auspices of Breast Care International (BCI), Africa’s foremost campaigner against the debilitating disease is to create awareness about early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Prior to the event, a mammoth free breast screening exercise was organized for members of the Assemblies of God and Methodist Churches in the area.

Both men and women from both churches were screened for Breast Cancer, and other non-communicable diseases including hypertension and diabetes.

Speaking at the event, Head pastors of both churches, Reverend Alex Ofori Amankwaah, and the Right Reverend Samuel Duah said the massive turnout is a testament of their readiness for the BCI Walk for the Cure event slated for October 14, 2017.

Clerics of the two religious institutions pleaded with women to shed off apathy and all misconceptions about breast cancer and report early to the hospital for treatment.

They promised their members will join the BCI team to education the public on the deadly disease using placards, and fliers. Founder and President of BCI, Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai thanked the pastors for their enthusiasm for the upcoming event.

“The Eastern region would tell a new story, after the walk, as the BCI team works with all allied institutions to drive down the disturbing breast cancer statistics affecting women in the region” she added.

Dr. Wiafe Addai thanked chiefs, media and civil society groups for supporting their drive to reduce the incidence and mortality of breast cancer in Ghana.

Elsewhere in the Ashanti region, enthusiastic members of the Ghana association of tailors and dressmakers have carried out a clean- up exercise at Oduom in Kumasi, near the premises of the Peace and Love Hospital, desilting gutters and clearing nearby shrubs, as part of their annual get together.

Dr. Wiafe praised the association for the communal spirit and assured her institutions’ continued collaboration to provide cutting-edge health services to all Ghanaians.
