The second phase of the Maternal and child health care training programme has resumed in the Volta Region.
The training programme is geared towards improving maternal health care delivery.
Dr Joseph Teye Nuertey, Volta Regional Director of Health said the Volta Region remains one of the deprived regions in maternal health and has the lowest number of midwives.
He attributed the sad development to the limited number of midwifery training school in the region.
According to him, the region until recently had only one midwifery training school but a second one had just been built in Kete Krachie with the first batch of students taking their licentiate exams.
The seeming neglect in maternal health care issues Dr. Nuertey noted had impacted negatively on the maternal and child health care delivery in the region.
He was therefore optimistic the two-year Korea International Cooperation Agency, KOICA, sponsored training programme would go a long way to increasing awareness of local residents on MCH (mother child health) and also to increase, not just the human resource but also the number of midwifery training schools in the region.
The training programme has brought together 12 Physician Assistant – Medical’s, 48 Midwives, 144 Community Health Nurses and 126 CHV’s from the three of the districts in the Volta Region- Ketu North, Ketu South and Keta.
The programme which began in August this year would end in July 2016. There are six phases of the programme within the two -year period with each phase tackling some of the pertinent maternal health care issues in the region.
