The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are on a collision course over the possibility of Togolese voting in the upcoming elections.
The Volta Region chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Tuesday has sounded a strong warning to Togolese nationals who intend to take part in the upcoming elections to rescind their decision.
According to the Party, any Togolese found at a polling station in Ghana making an attempt to vote would be mobbed and made to face the law.
Addressing a press conference in Ho Tuesday, the NPP Volta Regional Chairman, John Peter Amewu explained that the party would implement a monitoring operational strategy dubbed 'Operation Eagle Eye' to ensure "Togolese with criminal motive" are dealt with mercilessly in accordance with the law.
Mr Peter Amewu emphasized that "we want to send a strong warning to Togolese who are usually contracted by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to come and vote in Ghana for freebies to abstain from such practices and act of criminality"
"This is because we have designed a monitoring operational strategy called 'Operation Eagle Eye' to mob every Togolese who will dare to cross Ghana border with the intention to come and vote for freebies", he added
He however stated that any Ghanaian citizen resident in Togo would not be prevented from exercising his or her constitutional right on December 7.
Mr Peter Amewu also slammed the NDC General Secretary, Asiedu Nketia for inciting Togolese to take part in the upcoming elections and called on the NDC to refrain from the 'electoral criminality'.
"It is very unfortunate that the General Secretary of the governing NDC has no patriotic values by inciting Togolese to come to Ghana and vote for the NDC", he said.
He called on the former President, Jerry John Rawlings "to advice his [NDC] party executives to desist from the ploy of mobilizing Togolese to cross to Ghana to vote in the forthcoming election."
"We the NPP Volta are of the view that any attempt of such malpractice and electoral thievery might plunge [the country] into chaos and civil unrest", he concluded.
In a sharp rebuttal Wednesday, NDC Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho said, it has been proven that Dr Bawumia lied when he said the voters register to be used for the 2016 has some Togolese on it.
"Amewu is only trying to fly on the wings of that lie so there is operation tiger eye to create the impression that this whole Togolese thing is true," he said.
Calling the claims a blatant lie, he added that if anyone is a Togolese it is Mr Peter Amewu himself.
"John Piere Amewu is his name, go and ask him where he hails from...his parents come from Togo...I have called him for a debate in the Volta region, he should meet me in Ho and let's debate it...his ancestory, where does he come from?" Mr Anyidoho said.

In a related development, regional executives of the NPP have reviewed the party's plan to win three constituency seats in the region.
It follows what they say is the overwhelming reception given the Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during his 5-day of the Volta Region,
The party is optimistic it could clinch five constituency seats and 50 percent of the total votes in the Volta region in the December polls.
The Regional Chairman, John Peter Amewu was grateful to the chiefs and people in the region for coming out in their numbers to support Nana Akufo-Addo adding, "this is an indication that the Volta Region will send a clear message and shock the NDC by saying enough is enough, we are voting for the NPP this year."
"Indeed the people of the Volta Region have shown political maturity and have broken the myopic disposition of tribal dispensation that has long been in place. We thank God the yoke of traditional political bias of Voltarians has been broken."
The occasion was also used to launch the NPP's "Adopt A Polling Station" campaing in the Volta region.
The campaign aims to raise funds to empower party agents to ensure vigilance at the various polling stations nationwide on election day and give NPP sympathizers the opportunity to sponsor the party’s campaign activities.
