The campaign by Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to become Ghana’s first female president received an enviable endorsement from a packed audience at the International Conference Center in Accra when she attended the FAMOUS 5 concert on Good Friday.
Though Mrs. Rawlings, former First Lady, was not billed to perform, her presence was conspicuous and her day was made when the crowd started chanting their support for her flag-bearership bid, right before the cameras.
A deafening “yes!.. yes!…yes!” was the repetitive response from the packed crowd when ace broadcast journalist, Kwami Sefa-Kayi of Peace Fm asked whether Nana Konadu would contest President Atta Mills at the July 8-10 congress that would elect a presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Sefa Kayi was the emcee for the event and when he took his microphone right to the lips of Nana Konadu and asked her a direct question if she would contest for the NDC’s flag-bearership, her response was, “Absolutely”; as she nodded, smiled and pushed a clenched fist skywards to acknowledge the cheers and applaud from the crowd.
Nana Konadu’s declaration that she would “absolutely” contest President Atta Mills at the NDC primaries comes barely a week after she resigned her position as a Vice Chairperson of the NDC and explained it as a move to “enable” her to respond to numerous calls to contest the primaries.
Her entry into the race has ruffled feathers in the corridors of power, with the sitting president unsure of winning the slot in view of recent comments by Eastern regional delegates that he was being fooled by his close associates at the Castle because they were not telling him the truth and that he was not popular among the delegates.
Nana Konadu is however yet to pick nomination forms, though the party has made them available and also put out the rules and regulations governing the primaries. No NDC member has picked nomination forms yet, anyway.
She has also described as a mere window dressing, the series of endorsements President Mills’s flag-bearership campaign has received from NDC regional executives throughout the country.
In what appears to be a subtle but strategic campaign, Mrs. Rawlings has since last December patronized almost all the big stage entertainment events in the country, and it is believed this is a move to endear herself to the showbiz community and youthful population.
The 62-year-old Nana Konadu cat-walked the ‘Yellow Carpet’ at the recent Ghana Music Awards; and on Good Friday, she turned up, almost dressed to kill, at the FAMOUS 5 concert where she was caught by DAILY GUIDE cameras boogieing with high life Don Abrantie Amakye Dede and Kwami Sefa Kayi among others.
She was in her hallmark red lipstick with blue eye shadow and her dance moves were so trendy that one would doubt if she is really 62.
Nana Konadu and her husband former President Jerry John Rawlings had sent an Easter message urging Ghanaians to shun treachery and corruption and rather commit themselves to righteousness.
“As we celebrate Easter, let us use it as a period of self-examination and do away with aspects of our lives that go against Christian principles and betray the role Jesus played in washing away our sins.
“We can only impact positively on our society if we do away with negative habits such as treachery, duplicity, stealing, deception and betrayal, which have unfortunately become the order of the day.
“Our prayer is that this Easter will be a time for personal renewal and commitment, fulfilling the calling that Christ has placed on each of our lives.
“Let us use this period to sow seeds of unity, love and compassion to all who come into our lives – friends and foes, allies and opponents,” the statement said.
