A group calling itself the Upper West regional branch of the June 4 Movement is condemning what it describes as persistent attempts by former President Jerry Rawlings and his wife to destroy the party they founded.
Members of the group say they will not sit down to be used again by the ex-first family.
At a press conference in Wa on Tuesday, which coincided with the 33rd Anniversary of the May 15 failed coup led by Rawlings and some junior officers of the Ghana Armed Forces, the group accused the former first lady of being petty with her current claim of ownership of the party’s logo.
The May 15, 1979 coup even though abortive, created the platform for the successful June 4, 1979 coup which toppled the then Supreme Military Council II regime.
Joy News’ Upper West correspondent, Rafiq Salam quoted the General Secretary of the regional June 4 group, Geoffrey W. Tuu as saying that even if the logo is the intellectual property of Mrs. Rawlings, she should consider it as a contribution to a party she has benefited so hugely from.
Tuu suspected the former first family is undermining the sitting president who has refused to submit to their whims but said that the government still owes it a responsibility to protect the Rawlingses.
“It hurts a lot of party faithful when they hear some of these unfortunate utterances just because the sitting President John Atta Mills will not bow to the manipulations of former President Rawlings.
“Now that they have virtually become the campaign managers for the NPP by their actions, all party faithful should rise to the occasion to save them otherwise they will be in trouble.
“We should not compromise their safety, despite the confusion they are creating."
The group is convinced the NDC will win the up-coming elections comfortably.
Meanwhile in Accra, a symposium has been held to mark the 33rd anniversary of May 15.
Former president Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings were both present to address the gathering.
