Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Tuesday adopted contingency measures to limit the impact of the Ghana Medical Association’s (GMA) strike on vulnerable departments. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Mustapha Ahmed, Public Affairs Director of the Hospital, said the various departments were currently coping with the situation, but “at the same time, we are working tirelessly to prevent any difficulty”. During a tour of some wards in the hospital, ie Children, Maternity and Surgical, GNA observed that doctors were attending to in-patients and emergencies cases only. At the Ridge Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Dr Obeng Apuri, Medical Director of Hospital told the GNA that the Hospital has not received any directive from the GMA and will withdraw services if served with one. Going round the departments, the GNA saw medical doctors attending to in-patients as well as other emergencies cases. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) on Monday February, 11 withdrew services to all out patient’s clinical care in public health facilities and announced that they will only attend to emergency and in patients. “All doctors are therefore advised to go by this directive from the National Executive Council of the GMA and continue to attend divisional meetings to receive updates,” the GMA stated in a statement. “We will like to state that we have availed ourselves to all processes as required by law thus far and still no end to the issues.”, the GMA noted. The first phase of the strike is expected to end on February 17, but will resume immediately on February 18 with a total withdrawal of services to out-patient care, emergency care as well as in-patient care, until further notice. Meanwhile, the NEC me yesterday to discuss a letter written to the GMA by the Executive Secretary to President John Dramani Mahama suggesting the establishment of a committee to look into the concerns of the Association. According to the GMA, the strike decision was taken after all the series of meetings, consultations and correspondents with stakeholders like the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ministry of Health, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission following the award on the November 4, 2011 in the matter of migration of Doctors onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).
