The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has denied ever employing one Dr. Joseph Kenny Agogoa, reported to have been arrested for being a fake.
The Ghanaian Observer newspaper on Monday reported the arrest of the 48-year-old self-styled medical officer by the police after a tipped off.
Kenny was said to have plied his ‘trade’ for about a decade, at various medical facilities including a stint at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Hospital however, per a statement signed by Prof Nii Otu Nartey, Chief Adminstrator on August 25, 2008, says even though ‘Dr’ Agogoa was once at the Hospital, he was sent from the Ho Regional Hospital to Korle Bu by the Director of Human Resources Development Division of the Ministry of Health for assessment and evaluation of his competence.
Read the hospital’s response to the publication below.
FAKE DOCTOR GRABBED – AFTER WORKING IN KORLE BU FOR THREE YEARS.
This response is to correct certain distortions carried on the front page of the Monday, August 25, 2008 edition of the Ghanaian Observer with the above headline.
The hospital wishes to state clearly that the said ‘DR’ JOSEPH KENNY AGODOA (not KONNEY AGOGOA as stated by the paper) has never been an employee of the hospital.
He did not also work in the hospital for three years as stated by the paper.
‘Dr’ Agogoa was sent from the Ho Regional Hospital to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital by the Director of Human Resources Development Division of the Ministry of Health for assessment and evaluation of his competence.
The letter, which was dated May 9, 1997, therefore requested Korle Bu to organise a six-month orientation and assessment for him at the Departments of Medicine and Surgery.
After a six-month orientation, assessment by the then unit head of the Department of Medicine found Dr. Agodoa to be, among other things, seriously deficient in basic medical practice.
Based on his poor understanding and ignorance of general medical practice, the report suggested that “an in-depth investigation of his medical education. If this is found to be satisfactory then a structured remedial training be organised for him depending on his readiness to accept such corrections. Meanwhile, he may be withdrawn from the ward while his background is being investigated.”
It is important to state that the relationship that “Dr” Agodoa had with the hospital was only for orientation and further assessment which lasted from June 1997 to August 1998. He was therefore not employed in Korle Bu as carried in sections of the media.
The foregoing facts were forwarded to the Director for Human Resources and Development at the Ministry of Health in August 1998 which concluded any relationship between Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and “Dr” Agodoa.
Thank you.
