The editor of the Insight Newspaper is raising alarm over moves by government to sell the Kotoka International Airport and other regional airports across the country.
Documents intercepted by Kwasi Pratt Jnr, a copy of which was made available to Joy News indicate that government is seeking public, private partnership for the running of the Kotoka International Airport, Tamale, Kumasi and Takoradi Airports.
One of such documents dated May 16, 2012 and signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Enoch Cobbinah said “the Transport Ministry has endorsed and confirmed to the Finance Ministry the plan to undertake through Public Private Partnership procurement and rehabilitation, expansion and upgrade of the airports.”
A disgusted Kwesi Pratt Jnr told Joy News’ Anny Osabutey government’s move does not and will not make sense.
According to him, if it was wrong under the erstwhile Kufuor administration to sell Ghana Telecom, it was by the same token, wrong to sell the airports.
He said a government that resisted the sale of Ghana Telecom whilst in opposition cannot turn around to put up the management of the four airports in the country for sale.
He argued the Kotoka International Airport is a security establishment, the management of which cannot be handed to private interests.
Kwesi Pratt described as untenable arguments that private interests are needed to raise enough funds to maintain the airports.
The Insight editor is however yet to find out what the figures are for the proposed privatisation of the airport management.
The airports are currently being ran by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) which has Board of Directors as well as Senior Management members who are all Ghanaians.
The GACL was registered in January 2006 and has a responsibility to plan, develop, manage and maintain all airports and aerodromes in Ghana; Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and the regional airports namely Kumasi, Tamale, Sunyani as well as various airstrips.
