Coach Steven Polack and his players are not giving up their chase of the 2016/17 Premier League top spot as the coach has confirmed that they would currently not prioritise any of the two competitions in his quest to get the Porcupines back to fine form.
This season’s Premier League campaign still has 12 matches to end. According to the Kotoko trainer, he still has space to close in on the leaders, WAFA even as he keeps his focus also on the MTN FA Cup title.
“I’m focusing on both. The MTN competition gets you into the CAF competition but we are going to focus on the league as well. We will just take every game as it comes. The next cup game is in a month time. we can now focus on the league and see where we are after the next three or four games and see if we can get closer to the top and to WAFA” said Polack.
Asked if he will consider winning the competition, Steven Polack answered in the affirmative. “Yes, but let’s see how we get into the league. If it is mathematically not possible, then we will focus on the MTN FA Cup. But for the moment, we are focusing on both competitions. The focus is on the league at the moment” he said.
Polack did more assessment of his team. “The good thing is we are in the last eight of the competition. The other good thing is that, we created a lot of chances. We could have been four or five goals up at half time. We gave them chance to get back into the game in the second half. They were a lot more on the move and aggressive. We just scrap through after the ninety third minute. The most important thing is that, we move on for the next game.
“It is not just basically our team” he said of the lack of potent attackers. “We have played against a couple of teams. They have the same problem. It doesn’t matter who scores. We train a lot on goal scoring, crossing and finishing and it looks good at training. It is left with bringing in onto games. I’m going to fill sorry for the teams when we start scoring because it will be four, five or six goals and hopefully that will be the next game”.
On Sunday, Kotoko’s performance was average like it has been in Kumasi lately. The team however created more chances than before. They sadly wasted all the chances. Yakubu Mohammed and Baba Mahama both broke free from the left flank at separate times early in the first half but couldn’t find the net. Yakubu came face-to-face with the Wassaman United goalie, Effah Boadi but shot into his body for a corner kick which was wasted.
Baba Mahama again broke free from the left flank but saw his through pass to Yakubu fell behind the striker minutes after which Amos Frimpong’s hit to Sarfo Gyamfi was handled by defender, Kweku Duah but Referee Prince Amoah didn’t award a penalty.
