The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to its youth supporters in the Kpandai Constituency to remain calm and exercise restraint following protests over a recent Supreme Court ruling that reinstated the parliamentary election victory of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Matthew Nyindam.

The appeal was made by Rashid Tanko Computer, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the NDC, during an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Monday, February 2.

Using the platform to address the aggrieved youth, Mr Tanko assured them that the party’s leadership was actively working to resolve the matter and had not abandoned their concerns.

“I want to appeal to the youth of Kpandai to be patient and exercise maximum restraint. Leadership is with them. We appreciate their grievances, and it is not as if leadership is folding its arms. We are doing something about it,” he appealed.

He explained that the party was closely monitoring developments and awaiting a February 5 ruling, after which the NDC’s legal team would review the decision and advise the party on the next steps.

Responding to claims by some youth wing members that Matthew Nyindam had consistently won elections in the constituency through rigging, Mr Tanko said the party had maintained that position throughout the legal process.

“That has been our rendition all along. I have been very consistent on this,” he stated.

According to him, the Supreme Court’s decision did not address the substantive issues of the case but was based purely on technical grounds.

“It was purely technical—about timelines and procedures. The substantive issue was adjudicated at the Tamale High Court, which indicated that the election was rigged, and that cannot be set aside.”

His comments come in the wake of street protests by NDC youth in Kpandai, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn an earlier ruling by the Tamale High Court, which had annulled Mr Nyindam’s parliamentary victory.

The protesters insist that the apex court’s ruling does not reflect the will of voters in the constituency and have called on the NDC’s national leadership to take urgent steps, including seeking a review of the judgment.

They further argue that with the NDC now in government, the party must act decisively to secure what they describe as justice for the people of Kpandai.

The youth maintain that the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, David Nsala, remains the legitimate choice of the electorate and should be recognised as such.
