The Kufuor administration is the most corrupt government ever in the history of Ghana, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has said.
The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress said this at a press conference in Accra.
He questioned the motive for entering into a contract and procuring goods which will be delivered when the president is out of office.
This was in reference to the government’s decision to procure two aircrafts at the request of the Ghana Armed Forces which are to be delivered in 2010.
Mr. Afriyie Ankrah believes President Kufuor stands to gain from the transaction “after all a former Chairman of his party Harouna Esseku revealed that President Kufuor is directly responsible for receiving kick-backs at the Castle, the seat of government.”
“It is unthinkable that at a time when people are finding it difficult to pay school fees for their wards, when our taps have dried up in some instances for a year now and when an announced (load shedding) is being carried out, how can president Kufuor spend $ 1.4 million on (medals) that do not in any way address the bread and butter issues that face the ordinary people in this country” he charged.
“When it comes to profligacy and personal aggrandisement, President Kufuor has no peer in any of our former leaders,” the NDC scribe claimed.
Mr. Afriyie Ankrah also called on the government to as a matter of urgency render accounts to parliament on the money spent during the Ghana@50 celebrations.
He said one and half years after the celebrations government was yet account for the over $20 million dollars voted for the celebrations.
According to him, the NDC will review the national awards and make the choice of awardees more participatory.
The NDC Deputy General Secretary said the NDC also reserves the right to review the sale of state assets and will do so to ensure that the country gets value for money.
Responding to the issues raised, the Deputy Information and National Orientation Minister, Mr. Frank Agyekum, said the NDC was just being mischievous.
He said the NDC’s charges that the government had failed to render accounts of money spent during the Ghana@50 celebrations were not correct.
He said if Parliament demanded the accounts they will be rendered.
He however added that proper auditing procedures ought to be followed before any accounts could be rendered by the government.
