Former President John Agyekum Kufuor will next week address editors and senior media practitioners to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the repeal of the Criminal Libel law.
The forum which comes off next Tuesday, August 10, 2010, is being organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) as well as the Editors’ Forum, Ghana.
Parliament unanimously repealed the law on July 27, 2001, while former President Kufuor signed the law in August 2001.
According to the MFWA, the anniversary of the repeal of the law affords media practitioners the opportunity to examine government-media relations at another level, by engaging in a dialogue with a former executive president.
A statement by the MFWA said "In our view, the anniversary of the repeal of the law affords us an opportunity to examine government-media relations at another level, by engaging in a dialogue with a former executive President, providing us with his perspectives on the subject according to his experiences dealing with the media over a period of eight years without the haunting threat of this most pernicious of speech-criminalizing legislation."
Apart from selected members of the Ghanaian media community, representatives from all the political parties have also been invited to the forum.
