President John Agyekum Kufuor returned home Friday evening from Abuja, Nigeria after attending the mid-year Summit of Heads of State and government of ECOWAS.
He was accompanied by Nana Akuffo-Addo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and NEPAD.
Nana Akufo-Addo told journalist on arrival that the Summit, formally inducted into office, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas of Ghana as the President of the ECOWAS Commission.
The Foreign Minister said the Heads of State also reviewed and accepted the vision and strategic direction of the ECOWAS, creating a Sub-region without borders to facilitate free movement of goods and people.
He said the meeting also called for a common currency market, institutions, security and integration of people.
Nana Akuffo-Addo said the Heads of States engaged in open and long debates about the ideals enshrined in the vision.
He noted that for the first time in many years, guns had fallen silent in the sub-region with the resolution of Cote Ivoire crisis as well as Guinea Conakry.
At the airport to meet the President was the Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Ministers of States, the Chief of Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Joseph B. Dankwah and the IGP, Mr. Patrick Acheampong.
