Former President John Agyekum Kufuor returned home Friday night after a 10-day working visit to Geneva, Switzerland and Washington DC, USA, where he was made member of the Board of Directors of the Leon Sullivan Foundation.
The Sullivan Foundation was established to carry on the missionary work of the late Reverend Leon Howard Sullivan, civil rights pioneer and unflagging campaigner against apartheid.
A statement issued by Mr Frank Agyekum, Press Secretary, Office of the
Former President, said the Foundation's mission was to advocate for the poor and disadvantaged worldwide – with a special focus on Africa. The Board is currently chaired by Ambassador Andrew Young, former US permanent representative to the United Nations.
It said while in Washington, former President Kufuor attended the second session of the High-Level Commission on Modernization of the World Bank, formed early this year by the Bank.
The 12-member body chaired by former Mexican President, Ernesto
Zedillo, is tasked with making recommendations on how the institution is governed so that it can better fulfill its mission of overcoming global poverty. The Commission held its first meeting about a month ago.
The statement said in Geneva, former President Kufuor addressed the
2009 conference of the Global Humanitarian Forum, founded in 2007 by Dr Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The Forum is an international humanitarian organization that fosters
dialogue and brokers partnership to strengthen the international community’s ability to address more efficiently, current and emerging.
The theme of this year’s conference was: ‘Human Impact of Climate
Change.
