Former President Kufuor has disclosed his intention to establish a learning centre in Accra.
Speaking at the launch of The Thabo Mbeki Foundation at the Convention Hall in Johannesburg on Monday, Mr. Kufuor hinted that the centre would be christened John A. Kufuor Foundation for Leadership, Governance and Development.
The former president said he was following the footsteps of former presidents like Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, General Olusegun Obassanjo of Nigeria and Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique.
“I know my friend and brother, General Olusegun Obassanjo of Nigeria, has also instituted an ultra-modern Library Complex to serve as a centre of excellence in the acquisition of knowledge and development of skills for the youth throughout the continent. So has my brother-friend Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique who has set up a Foundation for Peace and Security.”
He therefore told the gathering “I am also in the process of establishing the John A. Kufuor Foundation for Leadership, Governance and Development in Accra, Ghana.”
Mr. Kufuor noted that the novelty of establishing these learning centres by former leaders of the continent is ample testimony that the African political landscape has changed or is changing fast.
He warned African leaders against engaging in subversive acts which force them out of their own countries after their term in office. He said such leadership style “is fast becoming a thing of the past”.
Former President Kufuor who was contributing to a panel discussion under the topic: “Africa’s Renaissance – Dream or Reality”, said the idea of African Renaissance is not a new one as Africans have, at various stages, tried to reassert themselves with varying degrees of success adding that there should be no time set for its achievement as that could lead to frustrations.
“The Renaissance should be seen as a process and not an event that should be bounded in time. There have been different stages of the Renaissance with the attainment of independence being a defining moment.”
