The Kumasi Airport has been temporarily closed down for repair works to be down on the defected tarmac.
Officials of the Ghana Airports Company say they were forced to embark on the unannounced closure after they detected some cracks which have developed into a hole on the tarmac.
The closure, which took effect from Saturday morning, has come at a time when domestic airline companies have introduced attractive packages to woo the traveling public which seemed to be yielding results.
The development has not only affected domestic flights but has also forced managers of domestic airlines to refund fees paid by customers who have made advanced reservations for Kumasi-Accra and vice versa.
Some customers were forced to pay fro Accra-Sunyani and then connect back to Kumasi by road.
But airport officials are tight-lipped on the matter, except to they will officially issue a communication by Sunday.
Nhyira News investigations reveal a construction firm, whose name was given as PW Construction has since last month, been patching defects on the runway.
Offices of domestic airline companies, especially Starbow and Anthrak are inundated with calls from customers who want to make reservations. Few of them were calling for confirmation of the closure.
Meanwhile, sources close to the Ghana Airports Company and Ghana Civil Aviation Authority are locked up in crunch meetings in Accra to find an immediate solution to the problem.
But it appears the closure will be maintained till October 5 when traffic could be opened.
