Some staff of the Kumasi Airport who laid down their tools on Thursday morning in pursuit of welfare services and payment of salary arrears have resumed work.
Workers of private security firm G7 Security System embarked on a two-hour strike against management of the Kumasi Airport after months of non-payment of salaries and social security contributions.
The peeved employees clad in red outfits abandoned their post to register their displeasure to the management.
According to them, they have worked for four months without pay and have been provided with one uniform for four years.
“Last Monday, we did a demonstration and they talked to us that by Wednesday they will pay our salaries. As we speak they have paid only one month.
“For four years now we’ve been working with one uniform, no rain coat when it rains we get wet. When we are at the car park and it’s raining we find somewhere to hide but when a vehicle leaves without paying toll we use our pocket money to pay else you’ll be in trouble”, they said.
Pacing about with placards that stated “Pay Our SSNIT Now”, the workers prevented contractors working on the second phase of the airport from accessing the project site.
They further gave a 24-hour ultimatum to management to settle the arrears it owed or would not work for the entire day.
This prompted management to hold a meeting with the staff, where a consensus was reached and the strike was called off.
The decision taken after the meeting was, all outstanding salaries and grievances would be settled in a week’s time.
Meanwhile, management has refused to make any comments on the matter.
