Voters in the Kumbungu Constituency of the Northern Region will go to the polls Tuesday morning to elect a member of parliamentary amid tight security.
Police in the region have confirmed to Joy News they have information some individuals may be planning to cause mayhem. The police command says they have identified 20 flashpoints in the constituency ahead of this morning’s bye-elections.
The Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, has warned the Police will deal with anyone found fomenting trouble.
ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said the Police have a strategy to ensure the by-election is free, transparent and violent free. He said the 20 flash points identified will be adequately manned and patrolled to curb any incidence of violence.
The Kumbungu seat became vacant after incumbent Member of Parliament, Mohamed Mumuni left to take up the post of Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP).
The New Patriotic Party is boycotting the poll. The Convention People’s Party (CPP) on Monday accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being behind a plot to use violence as a Congress means to rig the polls, but the NDC have vehemently denied the accusation.
The Northern Regional Electoral Commission (EC) Director, David Kanyi has assured adequate steps have been put in place to ensure the elections pass off without incident.
Mr. Kanyi has also confirmed the EC has received all election materials including ballot papers for the elections to start.
He said the EC, in collaboration with the Police, is putting measures in place to ensure the elections go on smoothly.
However, Joy News' Northern Regional correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed reported there are only a few people at some polling stations because, unlike other by-elections, this is devoid of enthusiasm.
