Interior Minister Benjamin Kumbuor has rejected calls for his dismissal from office. Pressure group the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has called for his dismissal citing growing insecurity in the country. A leader of the group Arnold Boateng in an interview with Joy News cited a litany of reasons for the immediate dismissal of the sector minister. “The issue of Akwatia is a typical example, the dying of a woman in a BNI cell, which he did nothing [about]. “Our position is that we need to restore confidence in the populace. And if the minister fails to act in such glaring abusive circumstances then it is a [problem],” he said. The group also made reference to what they say is the incessant attempt by the BNI to usurp the powers and authority of the court and flagrant arrests of the populace for no just reason. But in a reaction, the sector minister Benjamin Kumbuor said the call by AFAG cannot be taken seriously. He told Joy News, AFAG lacks the basic understanding of the work of the security services, insisting that the country is safe. He assured Ghanaians of absolute safety and peace in the run up to the 2012 general elections. “I do not think that anybody needs to be alarmed and needs to be thinking about 2012. Nothing will happen in 2012. We are quite clear in our minds as we begin to prepare towards 2012 and the security services are being engaged, retrained strategically and operationally,” he assured. Kumbuor said the specific cases cited by AFAG are random cases which should not be generalised. “People are just having partial perspectives on an issue. I do not believe it is the case that the security agencies are being used to target any particular group of people. Let’s begin to credit each other. After all, we are all citizens of this country,” he said. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
