About 1,224 candidates out of 1,985 registered for this year's Basic School Certificate Examination (BECE) in Kwahu West District passed with 14 out of 54 schools scoring 100 percent representing 61.7 percent as against 53.6 percent last year.
A statement issued by the Kwahu West District Directorate of Education said 761 candidates failed the examination with two public schools scoring zero percent.
The statement signed by Mr Seth Koranteng, Kwahu West District Director of Education said 20 candidates failed to write the examination due to ill health, death and pregnancy.
It said Nkawkaw Pentecost Junior High School (JHS) topped the schools with 100 percent passes and 29 candidates obtaining aggregate six.
The statement urged circuit supervisors, School Management Committees (SMC), Parent Teachers Association (PTA), headteachers of JHS, parents and civil society to intensify their monitoring and supervisory roles to improve effective teaching and learning in schools.
It attributed the improvement in performance to some measures including the transfer of non-performing teachers from some of the schools to ensure proper supervision by Circuit Supervisors and head teachers.
