The Managing Editor of The Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has confirmed meeting an officer of the US Embassy in his (Pratt's) office in 2008 to discuss matters relating to the then general elections.Latest cable releases by whistle blower website, wikileaks’ reports Kwesi Pratt Jnr as having met officials of the US Embassy and telling them Nana Akufo-Addo, New Patriotic Party flagbearer smoked marijuana.However, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., while denying meeting US officials at the US Embassy in Accra, recalled an interaction he had with the said US official over a myriad of elections issues, little did he know that the official was going to leak the information to wikileaks.Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, Kwesi Pratt recalled speaking to questions on whether Nana Addo used drugs but said while he does not recall his exact response, it is also his principle not to go telling third parties of confidential information he had of persons he knew intimately. He also regretted his failure to record the conversation, claiming he least expected the conversation would find its way onto the wikileaks site.He said he was shocked to see the wikileaks cable about him saying Akufo-Addo smoked marijuana.Kwesi Pratt, who offered to read the wikileaks publication of the said meeting, quoted the publication as saying he had claimed “Nana Akufo-Addo used to smoke a lot of marijuana... and I'm telling you, a lot. Even in the morning, there used to be a cloud around him and you could see that he was high”.Kwesi Pratt admitted that he knows Nana Akufo-Addo very well, but it is wrong to bring out confidential information about him (Nana Akufo-Addo) to the public domain. He also sought to downplay the level of attention being offered the discussions, saying the nation faced development challenges. Again the US, he said, should not come to tell Ghanaians how to run their politics.“I don’t think the US should come and say how we should govern our country. These Diplomats who come here are not better than some of us, we may be better off than some of them. It is shameful and worrying we should allow the US to become tin gods,” said Kwesi Pratt.He stressed that foreign diplomats did the same thing to former presidents Kufour and Rawlings where conversations with the two were also published in the wikileaks.He noted that the wikileaks publications should be an eye opener for the country, because the leaks indicated that the country had problems as far as security was concerned.Kwesi Pratt also advised the government to institute measures that will make ministers report back on every meeting they had with foreign diplomats and record the conversations, adding “if this thing is not done, the foreign diplomats will keep on twisting conversations they will have with government officials”.
