The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party has described as insult to Ghanaians, claims of unprecedented achievements by the ruling government.
Nana Akomea said whilst government officials tout figures and achievements they claim are unprecedented, the living conditions of Ghanaians are getting worse each passing day.
He was responding to the second Setting the Records Straight series organized by the ruling National Democratic Congress.
A deputy Finance and Economic Planning Minister Fifi Kwetey had chronicled what he said were unprecedented achievements in the energy, road infrastructure, and agriculture sectors of the economy.
On Joy FM’s Newsnight programme, the deputy minister again reiterated some of the unprecedented achievements he catalogued at the series.
According to him the NDC government in three years has been able to put up 1,500 boreholes for irrigation purposes when in eight years the NPP built none.
He said rice combine harvesters at the time of the NPP stood at four but in three years it is now 140. Maize harvesters stood at zero but under president Mills it is 25.
He said the “unprecedented single digit inflation for 22 months has stopped the price of kenkey from rising by 525 per cent as happened in the NPP administration.
“There has been unprecedented low budget deficit at the close of 2012. An unprecedented GDP growth rate; an unprecedented one million metric tones of cocoa; an unprecedented rise in foreign direct investment…” he rattled on.
But Nana Akomea described the unprecedented achievements by the deputy minister as mere “jokes” which should not be taken seriously.
He said at the very least, these so-called achievements must be seen to be affecting positively the lives of Ghanaians but the reverse is the case.
He said in 2008, GDP growth rate in agriculture was 7.2 per cent but under Mills’ unprecedented achievements in 2012 the GDP growth rate in agriculture is 2.8 per cent.
He also mentioned fisheries which he said grew by 17.3 percent in 2008 but under Mills' unprecedented achievements in 2012 it grew only by 1.7 per cent.
According to him, railways in Ghana was under complete divestiture before the NPP government came to office but managed to bring the sector back on track with the construction of the 10 km Accra-Asokportsonaa railway line. He said the NDC only completed the railway line from Asokportsonaa-Tema which is 5km and somehow turned around to claim that as an unprecedented achievement.
On energy Akomea said both the President and deputy Energy Minister have given mixed figures over the total megawatts added by the government in three years, an addition they claim is unprecedented and yet Ghanaians are grappling with nationwide blackouts and a load shedding regime.
“And in the light of all these you are able to tell Ghanaians that they have never had it so good and this government is doing unprecedented things in energy. [He is] insulting Ghanaians in a bargain,” he stated.
But the deputy Finance Minister Fifi Kwetey in a reaction said merely because there are challenges in some areas does not mean investment in Energy and agriculture had not been made.
“The mere fact there are accidents on the road does not mean that you have not constructed the road,” he said.
