Contractors working on the Achimota –Ofankor and Nsawam-Apedwa roads have attributed slow pace of work to the lack of funding for the project from government. Commuters have blamed the contractors of deliberately delaying the construction. The Achimota–Ofankor section has come to almost a standstill with commuters struggling with the dust on the road. Checks conducted by Asempa News reveal the contractors have difficulty with funds to complete those projects on time. The Resident Engineer for Comptram Consultancy, the campany in charge of the Nsawam-Apedwa section of the Accra-Kumasi highway, Mr. Robert Kwesi Gyesi explained that his contractor is expecting funds from the government. The Resident Engineer however admitted that work cannot be completed this year. He said a water tanker has been allotted on the road to water the ‘feeder sections’ in order to reduce the amount of dust that commuters have to grapple with. Mr. Gyesi assures users of the Nsawam-Apedwa section of the Accra-Kumasi highway that uneven spots and the bumpy areas will be taken care of so that inconveniences on the road are reduced to alleviate the suffering of the commuting public. Same is the situation on the Achimota–Ofankor road where construction has almost come to a standstill. The Ghana Highway Authority’s Resident Engineer on the road, Engineer Shelter Yao Lotsu says government owes the contractor-China Railway Construction who has since suspended work. He added that, reconstruction of the Accra-Kumasi road has delayed because the project is 100% funded by the government of Ghana. The project awarded in November 2006 should have been completed in November 2009 but has suffered delays owing to lack of funds causing its extension to 18 months.
