A band of Land guards yesterday invaded a stone quarry site at Oyibi, a suburb on the outskirts of Accra, terrorizing residents.
The gun-wielding men subjected their victims to severe beatings and warning them to vacate the land for good.
This is the latest in a string of brutalities suffered by residents of Oyibi at the hands of these men.
Some angry residents Thursday afternoon stormed the offices of Joy FM to draw attention to their plight.
They included two victims who were badly beaten on Wednesday.
“They asked us to bring our mobile phones. I told them I don’t have a mobile phone. They left me and then one of them with the gun came and put the gun to my neck and then began to search me. He took my money, he took the mobile phone… I had to kneel down and raise up my hands; he used the back of the gun to hit my back. I fell down,” one victim said.
Last month another group of land guards invaded the area in a very violent fashion, killing five residents and injuring many.
Edward Kofi Agyarkwa, a clan head at Oyibi whose family fell victim, told Joy News the townsfolk are helpless. John Atakora, an opinion leader of the area, tells Joy News, Security Agencies, must act decisively before Oyibi is taken over by land guards.
“Actually we are in a shake, we can’t go anywhere,” Mr Atakora said, hinting two persons were in comma after the beatings visited on them by the land guards.
Property belonging to a group of staff of the University of Ghana located in the area was also vandalized by the rioting men.
Meanwhile the Tema Regional Police Command says it has launched an investigation into the matter.
ACP Augustine Gyennin said the police managed to confiscate a Ford van that another group of land guards used to carry out their operations.
He urged people in the area to contact the police patrol team in the event of an attack.
