The Lands and Natural Resources Ministry has announced the launch of a 'Visit Your Tree' campaign on December 11, 2021.
The campaign is aimed at getting Ghanaians to assess the growth of the trees they planted six months ago.
"It [Visit Your Tree campaign] will also ignite a sense of responsibility on their part to care for their trees. It will be a time to remind them of how the Project is progressing and let them know whether the target was achieved and our plans for 2022.
At a media interaction on Friday in Accra, the Deputy Lands Minister, Benito Owusu-Bio, indicated that the exercise will help to boost the interest of the citizenry as the country prepares to embark a massive tree planting drive in 2022.
The 'Visit Your Tree' initiative is an ancillary programme of the 'Green Ghana Project' which started in June 2021, and is expected to continue next year with a nationwide target of 20 million seedlings.
"It’s now time that the public is also invited to get involved. So, the Ministry is organising a ‘Visit Your Tree’ campaign and this campaign hopefully, would be implemented and will be launched on December 11 which will be exactly six months."
"We'll be coming out with programmes that will sensitise the public and we would also be inviting prominent and eminent Ghanaians who helped in championing that cause on that day for them to also play a very leading role," he said.
The Atwima Nwabiagya North legislator further noted that a committee has been set up to plan the Green Ghana Project for 2022.
He said their assignment will officially commence after the launch of the exercise on December 11.
"The President and the Vice President, and all eminent chiefs will also be brought on board so that they will also visit their trees to lead as examples for all other Ghanaians to follow."
In June 2021, President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to plant more trees to preserve the country’s forest cover and the environment.
The President stressed that, “we cannot sit by and watch as our trees, flora and fauna are wiped out. Our very existence is tied directly to the survival of trees. Without the oxygen produced by trees, we cannot survive as humans.
“Lend your support to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources as it executes this ambitious national assignment. I will be planting a tree and I expect you too to plant one. Let us make Ghana green," he urged at the time.
