Madam Mary Hammond, mother of the troubled musician, Wilhelm Ramzy Amui, who dazzled audiences during last year’s Stars of the Future TV reality show on GTV has called on Ghanaians not to prejudge her son because he is innocent. She made the call when she spoke to Graphic Showbiz on Tuesday following recent reports in the media that her son had been arrested for allegedly being part of a car snatching gang at Ashaiman, a suburb of Tema.Ramzy, according to DSP Kwesi Ofori of the Public Affairs Directory of the Ghana Police Service, has been slapped with a provisional charge of robbery and is currently on remand at Nsawam prisons awaiting trial on March 15.However Ramzy’s mother has maintained her son's innocence claiming that her son has been unjustly arrested for assisting a childhood friend who was in need. She told Showbiz that a friend of Ramzy’s whom she named only as Jerry approached her son some time ago to help him raise a sum of 200,000 cedis for some acquaintances of his whose vehicle they were transporting from Togo to sell in Ghana had broken down.Jerry, according to Madam Hammond, promised Ramzy that as soon as they were able to sell the car, they would refund his money to him and because Jerry was Ramzy’s close pal, he agreed to lend him the money. That was some time ago and Ramzy had even forgotten about it until he received a call from Jerry after his return from the preliminaries of Idol West Africa, telling him that they have been able to sell the car so he should come for his money.Madam Hammond said Jerry picked Ramzy up in a taxi ostensibly to take him to his friends who owed him.The next time she heard of her son was when he called from the police station in Tema to tell her that, he had been arrested for being a part of an armed robbery gang. She said that Ramzy and Jerry were arrested at the Police Depot at Tesano which is close to Abeka Lapaz where she lives with her son.She insisted that her son neither knew the other members of the supposed armed robbery gang nor had he ever been to Ashaiman although she could not tell if the other boys picked up by the police were friends of Jerry, her son’s childhood friend.A news item published in the Daily Graphic of February 23, said five of the suspected armed robbers were arrested in Tema and Ashaiman and the other three were picked up at their hideout in Accra from where the vehicles were retrieved. The story quoted the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Emmanuel Kwakye as saying that on October 18, last year, the suspected armed robbers snatched a Grand Cherokee from its owner at gunpoint in front of the Agorgia Spot at Tema Community 11.One of the members, Kweku Antwi who is a taxi driver, drove the car to Afiadenyigba in the Volta Region. He said that a week later, the vehicle was being driven to Accra when it developed a mechanical fault on the Accra-Tema Motorway and it was towed to a hideout at Abeka Lapaz in Accra. The licence plates were removed and the vehicle offered for sale as one smuggled from the Republic of Togo.Again he said early this year, the robbers mounted another attack at a shop close to the Precious Chapel at Community 11 and made away with some valuables and snatched a Toyota Highlander vehicle from the owner of the shop.DCOP Kwakye said two of the suspects were looking for prospective buyers when they were arrested and the two led the Police to their hideout near the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) where the Toyota Highlander was retrieved.Whatever the truth of the story is, Ramzy, the budding musician, has found himself in a mess that may threaten his career.Showbiz
