As it happened: Rawlings laid to rest

Ghanaians on Wednesday, January 27, bid farewell to their longest-serving head of state, Jerry John Rawlings after holding four-day final funeral rites in his honour.

The body of the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had been lying in state since Monday with hundreds filing past to pay their last respects.

The body of the first President of the Fourth Republic was be laid to rest after he died on November 12, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The funeral rites took place under strict coronavirus restrictions with the government urging the thousands of Ghanaians to watch proceeding from the Independence Square virtually.
