LMI Holdings, a privately owned Ghanaian holding company engaged in industrial and residential estate development, has officially commissioned Perkins power plant for Kaneshie Polyclinic at ceremony in Accra.

The 100 KVA capacity power generator, valued at $36,000 is currently supplying power to the entire polyclinic and has restored the hospital’s 24-hour service that was cut to 12 hours a day during the peak of the country’s worst power crisis last year.

The hospital will enjoy a one-year free maintenance package which worth over GHC 10,000.00 from the distributors.

The severe energy crisis compelled midwives of the hospital to use torch lights to deliver pregnant women of their babies due to the breakdown of the hospital’s standby generator.

Joy News’ Kwetey Nartey broke the news last year when he reported that a woman in labour was assisted by torch-light-wielding nurses to deliver at the hospital.

The health officials and patients rely on lights from phones and torch lights to administer health care anytime the area was hit by power cuts.

Ghana experienced unprecedented power cuts for the past three years. It led to the rationing of power detailed on a load-shedding timetable.

Kwetey Nartey reported  that a woman in labour was rushed in while he was speaking to one of about a dozen patients and relatives fanning themselves in the unbearable heat in the wards.

Two nurses – holding a pen-size torch lights, directed the light towards the woman in labour.

The midwife run a razor to create a wider opening as the baby’s head popped out.

Soaked in sweat, the young mother was unable to hold back tears from the pains as the midwife finally cut the placenta.

The stitching of an opening was also done in darkness.

At the commissioning ceremony today, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr. Patrick Amoo Mensah, who was initially angry with the report started praising Joy News when officials of LMI said they were touched by the story.

The visibly elated Dr. Amoo Mensah described the gesture as a game changer which is making their work very smooth in the hospital.  

He thanked the management of the company for the gesture saying that if all the corporate bodies in the country were to emulate the example of LMI Holdings, pressure on health facilities would have reduced significantly.

Speaking after the commissioning, the Chief Operating Officer of the company, Mr. Francis Osei-Badu said, they were touched when the news was aired on Joy FM.

He said his company believes in corporate social responsibility and has been engaging in some of these charities.
