The Local Black Stars and Democratic Republic of Congo have been drawn in a last eight fixture at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.
Ghana finished top in Group C and will remain in Bloemfotein for the game against DR Congo who secured qualification on Wednesday after a 2-1 win over Burundi to finish second in Group D.
The quarter final between Ghana and DR Congo on Sunday will be a repeat of their clash in the finals of the maiden tournament in Côte d'Ivoire 2009, which DR Congo won by 2-0.
In a related development, Chairman of the Local Black Stars management committee Fred Pappoe has commended the playing body and technical team for their progress to the knockout phase of the tournament.
Ghana finished on top of Group C with 7 points after wins over Congo, Ethiopia and a draw with Libya.
Coach Maxwell Konadu and his team was criticized after the scrappy start to the tournament and Head of the team’s management committee Fred Pappoe has applauded them for keeping their calm despite the pressure.
“The technical team and the players deserve some commendation because for me they have done so well and proved a lot of Ghanaians wrong,:” he told Joy Sports
“After our first game many thought we were not going to qualify but the team came up so strongly and won the last game which ensured our progress to the next stage.
“These are players who are giving their all and I must commend them and I believe they will go all out and win the trophy.”
He added that, they still have to work harder in ensuring that they win the ultimate.
“There is still more work to be done and I entreat them to go all out because where we have reached is critical.”
Ghana will play Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday in the third quarter final fixture at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfotein.
