Local textiles manufacturers are elated at government’s decision to procure the fabrics for the free school uniforms locally. They entertained the fear that they were losing out to Chinese firms but at a meeting with Vice President John Mahama earlier today, government affirmed its pledge to source the contract to the local producers. The meeting at the instance of the vice president followed reports in the media that government was considering importing the fabrics from China because it was cheaper. The General Secretary of the Textiles, Garments and Leather Workers Union, Abraham Koomson, who sat in the meeting told Joy News that the vice president has directed the Ministry of Education to meet with the local textile producers to agree on how they will go about the production of the fabrics. The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), to which the textile companies belong were also represented at the meeting.AGI president Tony Oteng-Gyasi said the gesture by government has far reaching implications for industry. He is also happy about the attention the media gave the issue.Source: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
